Lyoto Carvalho Machida (Lyoto Machida) (born May 30, 1978)is a Brazilian-Japanese mixed martial arts fighter who currently competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight category. Machida has been a UFC light heavyweight champion on one occasion. On November 9, 2017, Machida is ranked No.14 in the official UFC rankings.   Machida was born in the city of Salvador deBahia, in Brazil,as the teacher’s third son in Karate-Do style shotokan 8 Dan Japan Karate Association or (JKA) Yoshizo Machida.Lyoto, who grew up in Belémbegan training Karate-Do at the age of three and won his black ribbon at the age of thirteen. He also started training 12 years and Brazilian jiu-jitsu since the age of fifteen. He then continued to train in Muay Thai with Marco Ruas and in shoot wrestling with Kazuyuki Fujita on the New Japan Pro Wrestling fight board in Tokyo, directed by Antonio Inoki, who was personally Lyoto’s mentor during this time. Machida made his MMA debut under the stage name LYOTO (all in capital letters) at the big Ultimate Crush event, in which he defeated Kengo Watanabe by unanimous decision.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

Machida made his UFC debut in 2007 in the UFC 67 event against Sam Hoger. Machida defeated Hoger by unanimous decision. He continued his winning streak on the main underlining of UFC 70 where he won by unanimous decision to DavidHeath. He faced judo practitioner and veteran Kazuhiro Nakamura at UFC 76. Machida won by unanimous decision and Nakamura tested positive for steroids. At UFC 79,Machida faced Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou,a judo practitioner who had earned his UFC debut after claiming the two fastest knockout victories in PRIDE against veterans Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona. Machida noted his first submission by making Sokoudjou surrender with arm triangle strangulation in the second round. Machida faced former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 84 on May 24, 2008. Machida defeated Ortiz by unanimous decision. At UFC 94,Machida faced the also undefeated and with his same record (13-0) ThiagoSilva. Machida defeated Silva by knockout with a second of the first round missing. After the event, Machida won the Knockout of the Nightaward. Machida continued his KOs streak when he knocked out Rashad Evans at UFC 98 thus winning the UFC light heavyweight championship. After the event, Machida won the Knockout of the Night award for the second time in a row.
